The numbers are staggering and more than 62 cases of salmonella contamination linked to the Ferrero factory in Arlon, a town in southern Belgium, have been identified, by the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) said in a press release on Friday 13 May.
Hereusement that the investigation conducted by the FASFC with the National Reference Laboratory of Salmonella Sciensano and the Communities (Health and Care Agency, Aviq and GGC Brussels) could be implemented and it was confirmed that 62 cases of salmonellosis in Belgium were related to the salmonella epidemic.
“No significant increase in the number of infections is expected,” the statement reports.
The ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) reports the figures of confirmed cases of salmonellosis in Europe and the United Kingdom linked to the Ferrero factory in Arlon.
The FASFC decided in April to withdraw the authorization of the Arlon plant and to recall from consumers all Kinder products manufactured there.
At the end of last week, Ferrero officially submitted a new application to the FASFC for authorization of the site. If the conclusions of the FASFC’s evaluation are favourable, a provisional authorization will be granted.
