Apptopia* has revealed in its study that Netflix has been downloaded 173 million times worldwide in 2021, ahead of Youtube and its 166 million downloads.
In the family of streamers, Disney+ is in 3rd position with 126 million downloads, just ahead of Amazon Prime Video and 120 million units.
On a global level, we note the appearance of the AVOD/FAST application from ViacomCBS, Pluto TV with 54 million downloads.
HBO Max ranks 7th with 73 million downloads and a global reach far below that of the streamers ranked ahead of it.
The US market is saturated with huge competition which is in fact a unique market as several applications are only present on this market.
In the US, Netflix is ahead of HBO Max and its 46 million downloaded applications. Disney + is close behind Netflix. Then we find services that are only present in the United States for the moment: Peacock from NBCUniversal and Hulu from The Walt Disney Company.
Tubi is the surprise guest with its 28 million downloads. Tubi is an offering from AVOD, an ad-supported video service that was acquired by Fox in May 2020; the application confirms the rise of ad-supported video-on-demand offerings.
Apptopia is conducting a study for France and this ranking is by OS. On iOS, Netflix comes out on top ahead of Disney+ and Amazon Prime. Then there are three French services: myCanal, Salto and myTF1. Molotov and 6play complete the ranking.
As for Android, the French ranking is different: Disney+ is in the lead, ahead of Netflix and Pluto TV, which takes third place. Then we find Molotov, myCanal and Salto. Unlike iOS, there is no trace of traditional TV channel applications at the top of the ranking.
