There has been a lull in Attack on Titan episodes for a while, but that won’t last forever. When the new year begins, everyone will be watching to see how the series ends. However, a recent screenplay discovery from season four has proved something fans have believed: that Eren and Mikasa are more than just friends.
The new information was found in the script for episode 87 of Attack on Titan. Several scripts from Season 4 were recently made available to Japanese fans, along with other behind-the-scenes materials. Eren’s now-famous moment in which he asks Mikasa to define “mean” was planned as part of these takes. The scene is portrayed as a confession in the script.
Going as far back as the manga, many viewers made that assumption when this moment first appeared in Attack on Titan. Although Eren’s admission wasn’t quite as forthright as Falco’s, it was nonetheless evident to everyone who knew him. Only Mikasa couldn’t understand the nuances of the situation. But the ambiguity in this scenario was deliberate because it all relates to a Japanese custom.
To those unfamiliar with the concept of kokuaku, it is essential to note that it is common practice in Japan to declare one’s love for another person publicly. Until a couple is officially together, expressing solid emotions or being blunt in one another’s presence is considered rude. As a result, expressions of love are often conveyed indirectly.
If Eren giving Mikasa a scarf wasn’t proof enough, his behaviour towards Mikasa has been obsessive throughout the years. In this scenario, Eren conducted a full-on kokuhaku confession by approaching Mikasa, but Mikasa hid her genuine sentiments and gave him a cold response. And now, because of Attack on Titan, they’ve grown apart to the point where getting back together might be impossible.
