World Bank breaks its piggy bank to help Ukraine

The Ukrainian government announced on Friday, September 23, that its country has attracted USD 11 billion from its partners via the World Bank (WB) since the beginning of the conflict with Russia.

“Loans and grants, including from the United States and Britain, totaling about USD 11 billion, have been raised through the Bank’s instruments since February 24,” he said on Facebook after a meeting in New York with WB’s Director General of Operations Axel van Trotsenburg and WB Vice President Anna Bjerde.

The World Bank is actively working to create new mechanisms to attract grants and investments for Ukraine’s post-conflict recovery, Chmyhal added.

In 2023, Ukraine also wants to launch cooperation with the WB in the energy sector, he added.

According to a joint assessment published on September 9, the Ukrainian government, the European Commission and the World Bank estimated that Ukraine would need about USD 350 billion for post-conflict reconstruction.
