THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, a box office success despite bad reviews

The movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, has a huge success at the box office. Audiences around the world are flocking to theaters to see Thor’s new adventure. However, many moviegoers and critics did not leave the theater as satisfied as they normally are with the MCU blockbusters. Thor: Love and Thunder’s critics’ ratings continue to drop.
Director Taika Waititi’s Thor received a healthy dose of positive feedback after its Hollywood premiere a few weeks ago. But regardless of that, the merits of the film have become a controversial topic, for Marvel fans. Many consider Ragnarök to be a vastly superior work. The film leaves the door open for a future Thor sequel, starring Chris Hemsworth, as hinted at in the two post-credit scenes of Thor: Love and Thunder. So how bad are things looking for Thor Odinson?
As of today, one of the most popular review aggregators shows a bleak landscape for the film on the Tomatometer. It places it as the fourth-worst film in the MCU on Rotten Tomatoes, according to critics. It then narrowly edges out Thor: The Dark World, The Incredible Hulk and The Eternal with a 65% critic’s score. Thor: Love and Thunder is slightly below average for audiences, with 82%. On CinemaScore, it’s no better. The median grade given by moviegoers at the cinema exit is B+. It is then only ahead of The Eternal in a surely more generous ranking.
On the other hand, on IMDb, Love and Thunder get a respectable (and even rather high) score of 7.0 which puts it above Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 2, The Dark World, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, The Eternal, and the only Hulk movie in the MCU. Compiling all these scores, Love and Thunder is near the bottom of Marvel’s library. Ragnarök, on the other hand, is still at the top. Critics of the film had warned that audiences might want to temper their expectations after Ragnarök, and it seems their warning was justified.
Certainly, many still loved the comedy of Thor: Love and Thunder and the story of Jane Foster. There is a lot of speculation as to where the Thor franchise might go. Even though Thor: Love and Thunder changes a lot from the Marvel Comics, especially with villains like Gorr, what seems to divide fans of the film is Waititi’s approach.
On the other hand, despite these criticisms, it won’t hurt Thor: Love and Thunder’s box office success, as it made over $300 million worldwide in its opening weekend. However, they could hurt its chances of surpassing Doctor Strange’s performance in the Madness Multiverse.
