Sonic 2″ tops the North American box office

The blue hedgehog Sonic has overtaken all other films this weekend to take the top spot at the North American box office, according to preliminary figures from Exhibitor Relations released Sunday, April 10.

In Sonic 2, Jim Carrey reprises his role as the evil, mustachioed Dr. Robotnik, who wants – quite simply – to destroy humanity, unless Sonic stops him… The animated and live-action feature film grossed $71 million U.S. from Friday to Sunday, April 10, for its release in the United States and Canada.

“This is an outstanding debut,” commented David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research, which specializes in film industry analysis.

The new Sonic movie, based on the video game of the same name, is stealing the show from the vampiric Morbius, yet another superhero movie from the Marvel universe, in second place at the North American box office with just over $10 million.

Sonic 2 with Jared Leto in the title role tells the story of Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from an incurable disease, who becomes a vampire in spite of himself by injecting himself with a serum based on bat DNA and can’t stop killing to drink the blood of his victims.

At the third place of the podium, The Secret of the Lost City, an action movie mixed with a romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, with more than 9 million dollars.

Next came Ambulance, a remake of a Danish film of the same name, which collected some $8.7 million for its release.

Another Batman movie, The Batman, retracing the dark adventures of the masked vigilante starring Robert Pattinson, came in fifth place with $6.5 million.

Here are the rest of the Top 10:

6. Everything Everywhere All at Once (6 million)

7. Uncharted ($2.7 million)

8. Dog ($635,000)

9. Spider-Man: No Way Home (625,000)

10. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (500.000)
