Since then, theater chains have struggled to survive, with only blockbuster movies attracting their previous audiences. The success of films like “The Batman,” “Thor: Love & Thunder,” and “Top Gun: Maverick” helped lure audiences back to the theater. People’s apparent preference for staying home with a cheap bowl of popcorn and a streaming service remains a challenge for movie theaters and production studios. That’s why Craig is coming to the rescue once again.
Craig’s Benoit Blanc, who starred in 2018’s surprise success “Knives Out,” was supposed to reprise his role as the southern gentleman investigator with the endearing drawl in a sequel. Although a follow-up was inevitable in light of the first film’s success, the news that Netflix had purchased the rights to the property caught everyone off guard. Instead, Netflix is undertaking something never done before by a streaming provider with their follow-up, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” Also, this could rescue the movie theater industry forever.
Netflix is planning to conquer conventional movie houses.
The unusual circumstances surrounding “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” were discussed at length by Deadline’s Pete Hammond and Todd McCarthy. Following the global popularity of “Knives Out” in 2018, Netflix reportedly paid $450 million for the rights to produce two more Benoit Blanc mysteries. Naturally, they would have made a lot of money on the films even if they had dropped them on their streaming service and kept everything else the same. The movie will be available on Netflix on December 22, but the directors insisted on a theatrical run first so that it will be shown in 600 theaters around the country for a week.
The release of “Glass Onion” in theaters achieves two goals: the film will look better on the big screen, and it will be an experience for the audience. The first is that it motivates people to watch the movie early (a whole month before it’s available on home video) because of the anticipation it’s generated among fans. People will talk about the film for weeks before their friends and relatives finally watch it. Many of the film’s fans will see it twice (once in the cinemas and once at home) because they like it so much, increasing the film’s total audience size. The second thing it does is that it gets a theatrical release, which opens the door to Oscar buzz (something the streaming service experienced to some degree with “The Irishman”) and “A Marriage Story.”
Is this the start of a new age for streaming services? Benoit Blanc is a fantastic choice if they want to set a new trend (one that Amazon is already adopting).
In Benoit Blanc, they have found the ideal protagonist to lead off their debut film series.
Netflix
More than anybody else in Hollywood, Daniel Craig has demonstrated their ability to serve as a series regular. There doesn’t appear to be any series he couldn’t turn into a moneymaker after his five-film run as British superspy James Bond. Craig is one of the most marketable actors due to the approximately $4 billion he has made at the box office worldwide from his five films (per The Numbers). Craig and Netflix are an ideal match once one considers that streamers have learned that franchise movies make the most money at the box office.
Craig’s character after James Bond is light and easygoing. In the wake of his tragic death in “No Time to Die,” Daniel Craig has done a Belvedere Vodka commercial and is now starring in a film where he can let his guard down and have some fun. Unlike James Bond, Benoit Blanc is a brilliant man who regularly cracks a smile. Craig’s Bond may not share the brilliant detective’s intelligence, but they share a taste for suitable clothing. Fans of previous Bond actors can find refuge in the costumes worn by Daniel Craig in both “Knives Out” films.
The individuals behind Netflix have proven themselves to be business masterminds. Their familiarity with the business is such that they were able to bring down Blockbuster and put the entire multibillion-dollar film industry on the brink of collapse. So now, with Craig at the lead, they want to start releasing their original works in theaters, and they will undoubtedly cause a significant shift in the business.
