The Celtics’ best player, Robert Williams III, the pivot of the Boston Celtics, faces a long recovery period after suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee, the franchise announced Monday, March 28.

Because of this injury, he should be away from the court for several weeks, which could be a serious blow to the Celtics in the playoffs (the regular season ends on April 10).

The Boston team moved to the top of the U.S. Eastern Conference with Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, but their 24-year-old pivot hobbled off the floor with a sore knee earlier.

The Boston Celtics confirmed that Williams, one of the key men in the Celtics’ recent rebounding spree with averages of 10 points per game and nearly 10 rebounds per game this season, had suffered a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee.

Williams adds to the already extensive list of Celtics players on the sidelines, including Jaylen Brown (right knee) and Jayson Tatum (patella tendinopathy), who are expected to miss today’s game against the Toronto Raptors. Al Horford will also be out, for undisclosed personal reasons.

Boston has won 11 of their last 12 games, and Sunday’s 134-112 win over Minnesota put them atop the Eastern Conference with a record of 47 wins to 28 losses.
