Several stars such as George Clooney, director Steven Spielberg and talk show host Oprah Winfrey were invited, but criticism of the event grew with the new cases of the variant delta.
Daily cases rose to an average not seen in months, while the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that masks should once again be worn indoors for both vaccinated and unvaccinated people due to the increase in infections.
Barack Obama asked the guests to get tested, but the situation became unmanageable, even President Joe Biden decided not to attend the party.
Republicans have been openly critical of Barack Obama for hosting the event, including Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who tweeted over the weekend that if former President Donald Trump had scheduled such a celebration, Democrats would have flayed him.
