There’s no doubt that Avatar: The Way of Water will end up in the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time. There was skepticism about the box office potential of the James Cameron-directed sequel to the highest-grossing film when it was first announced. Still, after only a few weeks in theaters, those worries appeared unfounded.
Avatar: The Way of Water is the highest-grossing film of 2022, with a worldwide box office total of $1.5 billion as of this writing. However, it has not yet broken into the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time and is still $1.4 billion behind the original Avatar in total earnings. However, it is currently raking in more money daily than any other film in the top 10, putting it on track to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time if it doesn’t crash prematurely, which seems unlikely given the longevity of Cameron’s other two top 10 films, Titanic (the third highest-grossing movie of all time) and Avatar (the top highest-grossing film of all time).
Avatar Everyday Revenue for “The Way of Water” Is Higher Than Any Other Top 10 Film.
Although its $134 million opening weekend was lower than the other top 10 films except for Avatar ($77 million) and Titanic ($28.6 million), on its 17th day in theaters (Sunday, January 1, 2023), it earned $24.5 million, $3 million more than the next highest-grossing film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($21.5 million). For the 18th day (January 2), Avatar 2 earned $21.4 million, which was more than double the next-highest Avatar’s $8.1 million. On day 19 (January 3), Avatar 2 earned $10.5 million, more than double the $8 million earned by the following top film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The accompanying figure demonstrates the impressive performance of Avatar: The Way of Water at the box office.
Should We Expect Avatar 2 to Break All Box Office Records?
It’s possible that this trend will only last for a while. It is expected that Avatar: The Way of Water will earn between $30 and $35 million in its fourth weekend, putting it behind the fourth-weekend hauls of five to six other top 10 movies. However, projections have consistently underestimated Avatar 2’s box office after its opening weekend. Cameron’s other top 10 movies, Avatar and Titanic, beat every other movie week-to-week starting on their respective fourth and fifth weekends, driving them to the top of the charts. If Avatar: The Way of Water follows in their footsteps, it will soon start to differentiate itself from the competition.
While the $357.1 billion opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame is a massive hurdle for Avatar: The Way of Water to clear, the original Avatar and Titanic proved that films with strong legs at the box office could overcome insurmountable opening weekend deficits. Even while Avatar: The Way of Water is already a smashing commercial success, whether or not it propels James Cameron back to the top of the box office charts remains to be seen.
