Today, we know that sleep has an important impact on health and we are convinced that lack of sleep can play an unfavourable role for our health. However, sleeping little does not necessarily mean being sleep deprived.
Each individual is different, the important thing being that the duration of sleep is sufficient for an optimal recovery in order to apprehend the following day. Depending on your age and your type of sleeper, you will not have the same needs. But how many hours should we sleep per night to be in top shape the next day?
In reality, you will have understood by these first words, there is no ideal duration of sleep but rather, an ideal need specific to each sleeper that we distinguish in 3 groups and whose distribution you find below.
WHAT IS THE AVERAGE LENGTH OF SLEEP ACCORDING TO AGE?
Sleep varies according to age both in its composition (sleep cycles) and in its duration. While a baby will spend most of his time sleeping for reasons of growth, learning and more, an elderly person will have less and less need to sleep.
The above figures are from the National Sleep Foundation, which studied more than 300 scientific studies to establish these recommendations expressed in average, maximum and minimum hours.
HOW TO KNOW YOUR NEED FOR SLEEP ?
To know your need for sleep, it is preferable to test yourself over several days without the need to wake up. It is preferable to have 2 or ideally 3 weeks of vacation in order not to truncate the result. Indeed, if you have a sleep debt, you will have to sleep more at the beginning of the test and this is a logic of recovery.
Then, let you live in a free course to test your need for sleep!
After a few days and after having recovered, you will test your free course (no constraint) and you will get up when you want to, that’s why it is desirable to be on vacation. If after a few days you get the same number of hours of sleep, you have a good chance of having your sleep needs and therefore the answer to your questions.
Moreover, you will also have your chronotype, you will know if you are an early sleeper or a late sleeper.
