The hero, Tarzan, has not finished appearing in the cinema. Indeed, Sony has acquired the rights to the famous character and intends to offer a new, more modern adaptation of the King of the Jungle.
Tarzan, whose creator did not imagine such a success in 1912. Did Edgar Rice Burroughs think his creation would become part of popular culture? Indeed, since his first adaptation in 1918, nearly fifty films based on the hero have been released in theaters.
The most famous of the film adaptations is the one with the legendary Johnny Weissmüller in the role of the King of the Jungle. In 1983, Christophe Lambert played one of the best Tarzan in history with Greystoke, the legend of Tarzan. Disney also adapted the character with the animated film Tarzan in 1999. Finally, the last adaptation of the character in the cinema dates back to 2016, with Alexander Skarsgård in the lead role (accompanied by Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson in particular).
The character of Tarzan also has several novels and comics more or less inspired by his universe. Since Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel is not yet in the public domain (despite being 112 years old), Sony has bought the rights to the work.
However, Sony wants to offer a more modern version of the character. Remember that Tarzan is a child of the English nobility, raised by monkeys in the African jungle after the death of his parents. Having to survive in the wilderness since early childhood, he develops superhuman physical abilities.
Are the character and his themes still adapted to our time? Indeed, a white man who has become King of the African jungle makes people cringe today, some considering the work as unabashed racism and an ode to the colonial period. So it will be interesting to see how Sony will deliver a good adaptation.
