The next Star Wars movie has a dark future

The next Star Wars film, “Rogue Squadron,” the film to be directed by Patty Jenkins, no longer has a release date. The film was supposed to arrive in theaters on December 22, 2023, but is no longer on Disney’s release schedule.

The Disney group has found the right recipe with the Star Wars series, offered on Disney+. Even if the shows are not perfect and have fundamental writing flaws, fans seem satisfied for the moment, first with The Mandalorian, whose season 3 will arrive soon (see the trailer). Then more recently, with Obi-Wan Kenobi, marked by the return of Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen. At the same time, Andor is about to air.

Nevertheless, the Star Wars universe remains on the big screen. Since Star Wars Episode IX: The Skywalker Ascension (2019), the studio has not released anything. But above all, no project has seemed to take shape. When you see that Marvel can come up with several superhero movies a year, you’d think there’s a problem with Star Wars. However, with the fans’ detailed feedback, and the films’ incoherence (aberrant for such a studio), we understand that the production teams take their time.

The series continues with one of the few Star Wars projects that had made some progress. As Variety reports, Rogue Squadron, which Patty Jenkins should direct, has been removed from Disney’s release schedule. In 2021, the film had already been delayed due to creative differences. This time, the studio did not specify a new date. Synonymous with cancellation? Possibly, but not necessarily.

On the other hand, it is pretty logical that the film will no longer appear at its initially scheduled date. Remember that Disney was hoping to release the movie on December 22, 2023, a little over a year ago. Given the complete lack of information around, it seemed difficult that the shooting could suddenly be launched and that the project would manage to finish in time to end up in theaters in late 2023 especially since Patty Jenkins must be a bit busy with Wonder Woman 3, which Warner had confirmed in 2020.

Skepticism is the order of the day on this project. Conversely, Taika Waititi’s seems to be on track. The director is in the good papers of Disney with his work for Marvel. And he’s sent some pretty positive signals about his Star Wars movie project. While the next saga movie is dated for December 2025, we bet it is the one of Taika Waititi than this Rogue Squadron…
