Swiss approve of Israeli artificial meats

Israeli manufacturer, Aleph Farms, will soon be on Swiss plates, but it will take a few more years.

Aleph Farms, backed by American star Leonardo DiCaprio, has submitted an application to the Swiss Federal Office of Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (Osav) to market its first cultured beef steaks, it said in a press release on Wednesday.

Selon une étude menée conjointement par Aleph Farms et Migros, «74% des consommateurs suisses sont ouverts à l’idée d’essayer de la viande cultivée».

The start-up, based in the Tel Aviv suburb of Rehovot, has already submitted applications for authorization in Israel, the USA and Singapore, but Switzerland is the first country in Europe where it is taking steps, its spokesperson told AFP. In Switzerland, Aleph Farms has teamed up with supermarket chain Migros – the Alpine country’s largest retailer – which acquired a stake in the company in 2019, to explore the potential of this new technology.
