What exactly happened yesterday on the set of Joel Souza’s film, a western shot in New Mexico with star Alec Baldwin. The gun in question was supposed to be loaded with blanks and finally, the gun was loaded with live ammunition and the director of photography, Halyna Hutchins was killed and Joel Souza the director was seriously injured and his condition is considered critical.

There are many questions about this tragic event that leaves two families in disarray and Hollywood in shock, especially since this is not the first accident of this kind, in 1993, actor Brandon Lee, shot during the shooting of the film “The Crow.

It was 1:50 p.m. local time when sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Bonanza Creek Ranch, located near Santa Fe, after a call to 911, the emergency number, informing them that someone had been shot on the set. According to The Hollywood Reporter, citing a production spokesperson, it was an “accident” involving a prop that needed to be loaded with blanks. A version was confirmed by the sheriff’s department, indicating that the incident appeared to be related to a weapon used as a prop. “Investigators are looking into what type of projectile was fired” and under what circumstances.

“Mr. Baldwin was interviewed by police officers,” Santa Fe Sheriff’s spokesman Juan Rios told AFP. “He provided statements and answered some questions. He voluntarily came forward and left the building after the questioning was over.” No charges were filed and no arrests were made. The investigation is currently ongoing. “The entire cast and crew were absolutely devastated by today’s tragedy, and we extend our deepest condolences to Halyna’s family and loved ones,” a spokesperson for “Rust,” said. “We have suspended production indefinitely and are cooperating fully with the Santa Fe Police Department investigation. We will provide counselling services to those connected with the film as we work to process this horrific event.”

This accident, as it is described at this time, claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins. The 42-year-old director of photography died. She had been flown by helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s department said. Based in Los Angeles, the Ukrainian-born former investigative reporter had worked on a number of independent productions, including Archenemy (2020), Blindfire (2020) and The Mad Hatter (2021). Two days before the tragedy, she posted a video from the set. “One of the perks of shooting a western is that you get to ride on your day off,” she had written, in a comment.

“I am so sad to have lost Halyna. And so mad that this could happen on set. She was a brilliant talent who was absolutely dedicated to art and film,” Archenemy director Adam Egypt Mortimer wrote on Twitter. “Details are unclear at this time, but we are working to learn more and support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn it,” reacted local union 600, of which Hutchins was a member.
