Severe thunderstorms hit New York State hard

From the smallest street to the grandest avenue, all were transformed into rivers, sweeping away everything in their path. A state of emergency has been declared in New York State, in the northeast of the USA, which is currently in the grip of severe weather that has caused extensive flooding.

A young woman died when she was caught in a flash flood in the Hudson Valley while trying to leave her home with her dog, according to national media. The heavy rains also washed out roads and stranded many people in their cars or homes.

The state’s highest authority, Governor Kathy Hochul, declared a state of emergency in Orange County, northwest of New York City, and in Ontario County, in the center of the state, where 200 mm of rain fell. “Life-threatening conditions due to flash flooding,” said the governor. “We are approaching a critical point in this weather event,” she added.

All highways were closed in at least five counties in the state, including Westchester, which lies just north of New York and borders the Hudson River. The Governor’s office maintains that the state should expect more storms on Monday. Thunderstorms could also hit the region again in the next few hours, according to The Weather Channel.
