There have been numerous live-action adaptations of Disney animated classics from the 1990s in recent years. The upcoming Aladdin remake, directed by Guy Ritchie, Mulan’s adaption, directed by Niki Caro, and Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid remake, set for release in 2023, are just a few examples. However, Disney is working on live-action adaptations of their animation classics like Hercules (1997 film) and other properties. Ritchie will direct again, and the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, will produce the movie version. And now we know a little more about what the upcoming adaption will be like.
The Russo brothers, through their own production company AGBO, will oversee the remake of Hercules. Joe Russo has given more details on the movie to Variety. The director has said of the upcoming adaptation that the tone and execution would be a bit more experimental.
With other Disney remakes coming under fire for being too faithful to their originals, Russo swears this one will be different. The director believes everyone involved is eager to see what they can offer to the project beyond simply reimagining the animated feature. Finally, Russo reveals what will serve as a piece of inspiration for the picture, and it’s a little out of the ordinary, confirming that the future adaptation will be a musical with a “contemporary” twist. Russo says whether it works as a musical is an issue. TikTok has conditioned today’s audiences, right? What images and emotions come to mind when they think of the musical? That might be a lot of exciting fun and would help us break some new ground regarding how to create a contemporary musical.
The Russo brothers and Ritchie want to remake the picture to match the success of the original 1997 version. The people working on the remake want it to succeed, but others want to be in the spotlight. Philoctetes, or Phil, was voiced by Danny DeVito in the 1997 animated version, and he has expressed interest in reprising the role in the live-action remake. DeVito expressed his interest by saying, “If they don’t put me in it, they don’t have a hair on their ass.” ‘I am the live-action ‘Hercules,’ he boasts afterwards. We could use the ears, the tail, and, of course, Phil’s unparalleled sagacity.
Presently, Hercules is still in its pre-production stages.
