Better understand renewable energy?

Renewable energy, also known as green energy, is energy that is replenished from nature through cleaner, more sustainable and better-for-the-environment sources, such as solar, tidal or wind power.
Standard energy, sometimes called “brown energy,” comes from fossil fuels that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to global warming. With climate change becoming increasingly important to environmentally conscious consumers, many are thinking about how to limit their carbon footprint. Going green with your energy can help the environment, as renewable energy is fed back into the national grid.
However, there has been press coverage of green energy providers and green tariffs that are not always what they seem. Consumers have criticized the confusing labelling of green tariffs. It’s worth noting that even electricity generated from renewable sources has some impact on the environment – think about the manufacturing, installation and operation of equipment, for example. That’s why some companies also provide information on the overall carbon content of their electricity, in the interest of transparency.
You don’t have to get all your energy from renewable sources. You can compromise and find a supplier that supports environmental projects, produces only a portion of its energy from renewable sources, or funds other carbon offset programs. You can also generate your own renewable electricity by having solar panels installed.
How can I generate my own renewable energy?
Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels – these panels harvest energy from the sun and convert it into electricity that you can use in your home.
Solar thermal – these panels capture the sun’s energy and use it to heat your water through coils that power your water tank.
Wind turbines – you can use these to generate your own electricity when there is enough breeze.
