More of Tobey Maguire’s terrifying role as the title character in Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle’s upcoming Babylon is featured in a new trailer. Chazelle’s fifth feature film shows promise in being the most mercilessly boisterous entry in the auteur’s career. Chazelle is the youngest director to win the Academy Award for Best Director. According to the official synopsis, Babylon is about the rise and fall of numerous ambitious dreamers in the 1920s Hollywood. It acts like a “fever dream” full of extravagance, immorality, and absurd excess. Stars like Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Maguire, Max Minghella, Katherine Waterston, Li Jun Li, Flea, and Olivia Wilde fill out the impressive cast of Babylon.
Paramount Pictures has unveiled the adult trailer for Babylon, starring Tobey Maguire as James McKay. We have only been given oblique references to his character so far, and they have painted him as a sinister mystery. Early in the teaser, James meets Calva’s Manny Torres, and it’s clear he will be a show-stopper. The new trailer is packed with teaser clips of sexually suggestive scenes, including one in which a character is impaled by a spear, another in which an elephant is brought in for a party, seemingly without a trainer responsible for it, and a third in which Margot Robbie’s Nellie LaRoy complains that someone snuck a dildo into her dressing room.
In this vein, early reactions in Babylon have only increased the film’s excitement.
Why doesn’t Babylon have a PG-13 or higher trailer?
All of these antics seem to be par for the course in Babylon, so it’s safe to assume that the writer-director has even racier moments in store, like the sequence that sounds like The Great Gatsby meets Eyes Wide Shut and which startled Brad Pitt with its explicitness. The film’s depravity is not a secret, but it is becoming clear that Chazelle’s concept of excess will be a wild spectacle best experienced in a theater.
In an exciting twist, Chazelle and company withheld the most scandalous sequences. They teased the debauchery in the video, although films with extreme sex and violence frequently get a Red Band teaser to showcase those features. The trailers for Babylon haven’t given too much away about the plot, instead tantalizing the craziness of 1920s Hollywood. Glamourous previews have gradually increased anticipation. A Red Band trailer wouldn’t do justice to the anticipated spectacle.
After its Los Angeles debut, reviews for Babylon were mixed, with some calling it an Oscar-bait period piece and others labelling it a hot, glamorous mess. The representation of Hollywood excess and the film’s three-hour runtime may be tiresome, but that may have been the objective. Critics, however, appear to agree with the film’s superb performances and chaotic atmosphere. Sneak peeks of them can be seen in the adult trailer. While critics may have been let down by what Babylon has to give, audiences may be so pleased by what the picture has to offer that it becomes another success for writer-director Chazelle.
