The Halloween weekend is rapidly approaching, so it’s the perfect time to binge-watch your collection of terrifying streaming movies. So far, 2022 has been an incredible year for the horror genre. Hocus Pocus 2 was one of the highly anticipated films that debuted on Disney+ towards the end of last month. This scary but kid-friendly sequel to the 1993 classic set the mood for Halloween. In light of this, it has been revealed that the week of September 26–October 2 saw 2.7 billion minutes of Hocus Pocus 2 being streamed, breaking the previous record established by the original film by a wide margin.
The previous record holder was last year’s smash Disney animated picture Encanto, which had 2.2 billion minutes streaming in its first week on Disney+. Hocus Pocus 2 surpassed that. This record-breaking sum includes the first weekend of the release of this witchy sequel, which occurred on Friday, September 30. Hocus Pocus 2’s record-breaking success is no surprise, given the film’s many positive aspects. As the first point of interest, this movie was 29 years in production and was released exclusively on Disney+. Even after 30 years, the original Hocus Pocus movie still has the staying power of a franchise with many follow-ups. Even before the sequel’s announcement, Disney was making a fortune off of merchandise for this property.
Hocus Pocus nostalgia is at an all-time high, and the fact that Hocus Pocus 2 lived up to its enormous expectations certainly didn’t hurt. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy all effortlessly remounted their broomsticks and returned to the comedy gold of the previous film in the sequel. Reviewing the film, we at Collider rated it a B+ and said it “summons the enchantment of nostalgia with humor, emotion, and music, and admirably satisfies the heart of spectators yearning to recreate the past.” Hocus Pocus was originally a coming-of-age narrative with a spooky, atmospheric tone about overcoming the cynicism that inevitably sets in as we age. Hocus Pocus 2 tells a touching story of sisterhood with the same genre premise as the first film.
